Volvo XC70 was something between a wagon and a crossover. The vehicle was very popular in its homeland Sweden and in Europe. However, the company discontinued its base version, V70 executive car three years ago. Now, the 2020 Volvo XC70 is ready to continue its own life as a crossover SUV positioned between XC60 and XC90. Its siblings will use as a good base and examples of how to make a good SUV. Still, the new XC70 can bring some cool things to the table. Well, some classic details that made it so popular in Europe will come back.
The Swedish company is expanding its lineup. The XC90 is heading to the new generation with a fresh platform. Monograph Concept is a future architecture for all Volvo’s big SUVs. Being positioned between it and XC60 gives XC70 an option to adopt some design and mechanical features and solutions from the new concept. Fans would like to see it. But, the last word is in Volvo. The company could go after a wagon crossover, something similar Subaru is producing. However, this is going to be the luxurious version so the XC70 wouldn’t have too many rivals.
2020 Volvo XC70 Engines and Specs
The new 2020 Volvo XC70 could use the same engines as before. However, another option is to borrow some of the existing units from its closest siblings. The first solution means the new SUV is getting T4, T5, or T6 powertrain. These were available when the XC70 appeared for the last time in Europe. The base version was a turbo-four displacement with the capability to produce 180 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. A 1.6-liter displacement can get the boost and create 10 hp more.
But, being between XC90 and XC60 means the 2020 Volvo XC70 needs more power. A 2.0 unit is still way behind the needed energy. It can produce 200 hp and 220 pound-feet of torque. More power comes from a T5 setup. It is the same 2.0 unit with higher output – 250 hp and 260 lb-ft. Top of the class engine from its predecessor could be a 2.5-liter inline five. It produces 260 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque.
The XC 60 can offer another option. It is a T system with 305 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. With it, the 2020 Volvo XC70 can draw more attention. Still, it is a four-cylinder unit with turbo- and supercharger. The XC90 can add one more configuration – a combination of a turbo+supercharged engine and electric motor. This is the most powerful drivetrain the XC70 can get. It is creating 400 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
Diesel Engines
Besides petrol, there are few diesel options for the 2020 Volvo XC70. Its predecessor ended up with a unit creating only 120 hp. That is not enough for this SUV. But, D4 or D5 configurations can fix the deal. The first one goes up to 180 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, while D5 adds 40 ponies and 30 lb-ft respectively. Well, gas emissions won’t allow these to appear in the US. So, Volvo is keeping diesel engines for European customers.
2020 Volvo XC70 Styling
The 2020 Volvo XC70 will borrow many solutions from its larger sibling. The XC90 is going to be based on the new Monograph Concept. That means a more aggressive appearance and a luxurious interior. Still, we need to wait to see what form the XC70 is going to take. As a station wagon with some elements of an SUV, it wouldn’t have competition. Still, we don’t know how interested buyers would be in such a vehicle. The SUV lineup must grow, and the new model could also be some lighter version of the XC90.
Release Date and Price
The comeback of the 2020 Volvo XC70 is not confirmed yet. However, the company is not going to wait for too long if they want to take a good position and start sales before the competition jumps in with their SUVs. In the next few months, we will follow all steps by the Swedish carmaker and decide where they will launch the upcoming vehicle. The same is with price, which is not going to be available before the car’s debut.
