Touareg is still new. The SUV entered the new generation and now it is time for further changes. The German company didn’t unveil everything with the 2019 year model. The next edition, 2020 Volkswagen Touareg, will add a new engine. The largest diesel powertrain is not heading to the USA. Also, its release in Australia will be later. A turbodiesel mill is coming from Audi SQ7 and it makes the Touareg the most powerful model in the VW family.
Besides the new engine, this SUV is not taking other changes. With a new design came with this year’s model, no one expected a refresh. VW could add some paintjobs for the new edition and special trim level. Of course, the center of that one will be a 4.0-liter engine. Fans can expect the price to explode with the V8 drivetrain. Currently, the most expensive version of the SUV is an R-Line with a V6 engine. The new 2020 Volkswagen Touareg will add at least 5,000 pounds / 5,500 euros over the current value.
2020 Volkswagen Touareg New Engine Specs
The biggest change for the 2020 Volkswagen Touareg is a new source of power for the high-end models. A V8 turbodiesel engine debuted in Geneva and it is making this SUV the most powerful one in the lineup. A 4.0-liter unit is capable to produce 310 kW (415 hp) and 900 Nm (665 lb-ft) of torque. As you can guess, the diesel engine is not coming to the USA. According to the company, the engine meets all European emission standards. However, it must be confirmed. The new 2020 VW Touareg with a V8 unit borrowed from Audi SQ7 will accelerate 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. The max speed is limited to 155 mph (250 kmh).
For the Audi SQ7, this engine delivers more power. Also, the new Touareg might be the most powerful SUV in the squad currently, but one of its previous editions delivered more ponies. It was the first ever VW Touareg with V12 drivetrain and nearly 450 hp.
Other Engines
The new SUV will continue to use its most popular engines. Diesel is definitely one of the best options. You don’t have to pick a V8 since the VW also offers V6 with its BlueMotion technology. A 3.0-liter unit will deliver different values, from 230 up to 250 ponies. Torque is at 550 Nm (405 lb-ft). We still don’t know towing capacity numbers for a V8 model, but V6 can haul 3,500 kg (7,700 lbs). A power router is an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Currently, only one petrol engine is available for the new generation of the SUV. A 3.0-l V6 could get the reinforcement next season, but we still don’t have details about it. In the previous session, Touareg offered 3.6 and 4.2 units. Now, a 3.0 is ready to produce 290 hp and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque. We are still waiting to see if the 2020 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid is coming next year. Supercharged TSI engine had help from an electric battery and this system added 80 ponies and 120 lb-ft of twist more.
2020 Volkswagen Touareg Versions and Equipment
The new 2020 Volkswagen Touareg will be available in all three standard levels as before. The entry-level model is SEL. It offers 19-inch wheels, leather seats, adaptive cruise control, and parking sensors at both ends. Pick an R-Line model and you are getting 4-zone climate control and park assist feature. The German carmaker will also add wireless charger for smartphones and numerous other features through an R-Line equipment pack. The R-Line Tech is top of the range offer with “Innovision” display system and large 20-inch wheels.
The new V8 model will bring special packages. This is the top of the line offer and its equipment will make the SUV very special. Elegance trim comes with the minimalistic cockpit. It uses cool colors. The other trim level is the total opposite. It is called Atmosphere, and it comes with warmer colors and natural paintjobs. Still, the standard offer includes 19-inch wheels, air suspension, 4-zone climate, and parking sensors. Sight package with LED lights and a night-vision camera is also there.
2020 VW Touareg Release Date
The major change for the 2020 Volkswagen Touareg lineup is the V8 engine. It will be available in Europe early next year. The new SUV is not coming to the United States. Buyers there have Atlas as the rebadged version of this big SUV. Touareg is also popular in Australia. However, fans in this part of the world are not going to see this model any time soon. VW’s department there confirmed the SUV is set for 2021 season.
The price of the current Touareg lineup will remain unchanged. An entry-level SEL will cost around 55,000 euros. If you choose a standard R-Line SUV, you will add 4,000 euros, and R-Line is over 3,000 euros more. Petrol engine costs 5,000 euros more than a diesel V6. A V8 will increase the price of over 70,000 euros.
