Its been a while since Mitsubishi did a lot of work on its famous Pajero SUV. Now it is time for a big redesign and a new generation. The vehicle will get similar design solutions as the L200 truck. The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero is going through serious changes for the first time in the third millennium. Actually, the SUV was redesigned in 2006, but it remained based on the previous generation that make a strong impact when appeared in 1999. Now, it is time for a big redesign.
The company confirmed the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero. Well, they did it indirectly. Chiefs admitted the SUV needs modernization in every possible way. The look is still appealing, but the interior must get fresh features and the latest infotainment system. Besides that, the engine room needs a revisit. Current drivetrains will deliver balanced on- and off-road performance. But, emissions are becoming a serious problem. So, besides the new look, Pajero, or Shogun, as it is called in some markets, is getting new drivetrains.
2020 Mitsubishi Pajero New Shape Based on the L200 Truck
Again, Mitsubishi is using different names for the L200 pickup truck in some parts of the world. We will find it as Triton, Strada, or Barbarian. An alternative name for 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero remains Shogun. The pickup truck suffered a big redesign couple of years ago. Now, the same design language is going to be used for the flagship SUV. New shape and interior are the highlights of this change. Modernized, Pajero will be more attractive to younger buyers. It comes with a variety of infotainment and connectivity features to draw more attention.
The narrower grille will replace an old-looking front fascia on the SUV. The new 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero also gets fresh headlights, bumpers, and wheels. We will see how much space remains beneath the vehicle. That will decide the purpose of the SUV and its off-road capabilities. Of course, the rear end also gets a fresh visual appearance. Mitsubishi could lift the back of the SUV as they did it with an L200 pickup.
Interior Features and Technology
Mitsubishi updated its most famous SUV several times. However, the vehicle never had such big redesign as the one coming next season. The aging interior was interesting mainly because of its old-school layout. But, the modern time is harsh and it requires frequent updates. While other companies are doing it every 3-4 seasons, the Japanese company waits more than 20 years. If this is their approach, then 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero will be the SUV for the next decade.
This vehicle can’t keep the pace with its rivals. It is spacious, off-road capable, with a simple layout. But, nowadays buyers want more and more from their ride. Connectivity seems to be the most important segment of the offer. Wi-Fi hotspots, integration of smartphones, wireless charging pads… the 2020 Pajero will need it if the carmaker wants to sell it. Well, the old design has no future in the market. The good thing is that Mitsubishi is a part of a big alliance with Nissan and Renault, and this carmaker also cooperates with the FCA group. So, the new Pajero can use one of the existing layouts, since Mitsubishi’s partners are delivering some of the most advanced technologies in the SUV segment (for example – new Nissan Armada).
2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a smaller sibling of the regular SUV. This is a mid-size vehicle that has not too much in common with its larger stablemate. Well, the upcoming full-size SUV can borrow some ideas. Pajero Sport is a modern and attractive vehicle which entered a new generation a couple of years ago. It uses Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as navigation, parking sensors, and surround-view camera.
Mitsubishi Pajero Future
The new shape of the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero heavily depends on the profitability of the full-size SUV. This class is not the best selling one. However, it generates a lot of profit. But, the new Pajero needs big investment into its development. Not too much will be left from the old version. So, Mitsubishi chiefs are timidly speaking of the new generation. They want it, but the move is pretty risky and there are no guarantees it will pay off. Pajero has an army of fans. But, Mitsubishi is not among the leaders in the SUV segment, so it is questionable if the new Pajero could have a great marketing and advertising campaign.
New Drivetrains
Currently, Pajero is using three petrol units. The base one 3.0-liter is available in China only. A 3.8-liter is the biggest one and it is capable to produce 275 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. Some markets will also get a 3.5-liter version. Outside the US, the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero will continue to use diesel units. A 3.2-liter turbodiesel is good for 200 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. However, most buyers will opt for a 2.8-l powertrain with 140 hp and 230 pound-feet of twist. Only Chinese buyers can find a 2.4-liter four-pot diesel engine under the hood of the SUV. This mill will be part of the lineup for 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero.
2020 Mitsubishi Pajero US Release
After the redesign, the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero will be eligible to make a comeback to the major stage. The full-size SUV segment is not popular nowadays. The price is a stumbling block since smaller vehicles are now very versatile. Mid-size SUVs will offer you enough space, a lot of power, and excellent off-road skills. These are the thing that made big rigs different from other vehicles. Now, the new generation of Pajero will craft the old-school solutions with modern elements. That is a missing piece on the US market and the reason to believe the 2020 Pajero will succeed.
