It is time for the new generation. The 2020 Mitsubishi Montero will get some serious updates and changes to finally refresh the exterior and interior look. Thanks to the big alliance, where Nissan is the key factor, this vehicle will borrow the platform from the Patrol SUV. Well, these are big news, but we don’t know too many details. Mitsubishi could finally launch the PHEV model. A few years ago, chiefs announced this version will be available in 2018. Obviously, it’s been delayed for some reasons.
Outside the Americas, you will find this full-size SUV also known as Pajero. This is one of the longest-serving nameplates and company’s most famous models. In Asia, we will see the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. This model has nothing in common with the vehicle whose name it is using. It is a smaller SUV and belongs to the mid-size class.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero US Release Date
We will see if Montero is coming to the US, where Mitsubishi offers only Outlander. You can check the latest news about this SUV HERE. It would be a great addition, but many factors are keys here. First of all, there is strong competition. To survive in the full-size segment, the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero needs to be exceptional. Furthermore, their ally, Nissan, is already there with Armada. It doesn’t achieve great selling records recently, so extra competition would make more damage. Still, the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero is going to be more off-road capable. So, there is a chance for this SUV. For the US market, it will need a V8 engine, and Nissan is again the key factor.
Specs
Most full-size SUVs in the USA are using a V8 engine. Nissan Armada is powered by a 5.6-liter unit capable to produce 390 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. If the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero decides to borrow this powertrain, expect the same outputs. Towing capacity is quite impressive – 8,500 pounds.
In other countries, Mitsubishi will stick up to the current lineup. A 3.8-liter V6 is the biggest one and it delivers 275 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. Besides that, Pajero/Montero will have a pair of V6s. One is a 3.5-liter drivetrain, while Chinese buyers only can find a version with a 3.0 engine.
The 2020 Mitsubishi Montero will also use diesel power. A pair of these units will be able to deliver 140 or 200 hp. The larger one is a 3.2-liter turbo, with 330 pound-feet of torque. A smaller version is a 2.8-liter four-cylinder.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero PHEV
This model was announced a long time ago. In 2014 chiefs confirmed the development of Plug-in hybrid. However, this drivetrain was planned for 2018, but the company failed to deliver. We hope the delay is not huge and Mitsubishi will launch Montero PHEV next season. Also, that is another reason to believe the SUV could appear in the US. Still, there is a lot of missing information which we will try to complete in the next couple of months.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Redesign and Release Date
The new 2020 Mitsubishi Montero will be based on the L200 truck. The Japanese company is using few names for most of their vehicles. So, sometimes, you will see L200 as Triton. The truck is going to be redesigned and the full-size SUV will carry over as much as it can. That means the new front fascia, technology, and interior.
The 2020 Montero will arrive next year. The new generation will bring a lot of updates, so the SUV will steal some of the big shows. We believe the company will preview it in China, especially if it gets a PHEV drivetrain.
