Toyota Land Cruiser is a close sibling to the Lexus LX. These two big rigs are sharing a lot of things in common. But, when you find a model called Land Cruiser Prado outside the US, that one is smaller. This is a counterpart to the GX lineup for the United States and Canada. Recently, we could see the new edition of LC Prado with a lot of changes. That means only the 2020 Lexus GX will suffer some modifications as well. The preview of Toyota’s SUV can show us the way of development for the three-row mid-size luxury GX model.
The 2020 Lexus GX redesign can also bring changes under the hood. The SUV will keep its current lineup, but the hybrid is a possibility for this segment. Lexus is already offering this kind of drivetrain for all smaller crossovers and SUVs (UX, NX, and RX). Now, it should be time for electrification of the larger model, and this model will appear as GX 470h. F Sport version is another possibility, as well as the TRD upgrades that will make the SUV more capable for an off-road drive.
Rumors and Truth 2020 Lexus GX
It is definitely time for the redesign. The current generation of the GX dates from 2009 and it really needs serious modernization. All other siblings of the mid-size SUV went through recent facelifts. The GX 460 still looks like an old-school model from the end of 2000s. But, after the redesign, it will put up some muscles. The 2020 Lexus GX will have to be more aggressive to keep up with the competition. Interior needs a complete overhaul. Still, we don’t have any official details about this. However, rumors and speculations based on what we can see on other models, hints by the company, and expectations, can show us the way of development of the next GX SUV.
Spy Shots Confirm 2020 Lexus GX Redesign
Heavy camouflage on the prototype is hiding something. All parts are well covered and hidden from the sight of curious fans and spy photographers. Still, the test mules are confirming that something big is going on. With these vehicles on streets, we can say with confidence that the 2020 Lexus GX redesign could start the new, third generation of the SUV.
We can’t wait to see the new grille. On the current edition is seems smaller than on other siblings. Spindle grille on the LX or RX is a highlight of the complete front fascia. Still, there will be changes on bumpers and headlights to complete the all-new look. We can also expect a new shape of the rear end. A three-row SUV will be more aggressive. Well, designers will have to make it roomier inside.
Interior is going to offer all the latest infotainment systems. Toyota had its own Entune infotainment system. Last year, the Japanese company decided to add Apple CarPlay to some of its vehicles, and in 2019 they also included Android Auto to some SUVs and trucks. Both these services will be available for the new 2020 Lexus GX. Besides that, the company is working on safety. The premium SUV had a lot of features, but much advanced equipment was optional. Now, new technologies with cameras and sensors will improve overall safety.
2020 Lexus GX Specs, Hybrid Model, TRD, F Sport
The new 2020 Lexus GX is going to carry over a 4.6-liter V8 engine with 300 hp. All-wheel drive is standard and the six-speed automatic transmission is a power router. A current model of three-row SUV is not too fuel-friendly with 16 mpg combined. The new one could add a mile or two thanks to the usage of lightweight materials in body structure.
But, the new GX will need a lot of improvements. First, to get a better fuel economy, the company could develop a hybrid drivetrain. It is still unknown what kind of engine will be the base for this breed of vehicles, V6 or a V8. Anyway, the electric motors will boost power production and save some fuel.
Fuel economy is not the only segment engineers in Lexus are working on. The next edition will improve driving skills, on and off the road. For the highway runs and quick moving in urban conditions. The F Sport package would make it easier for the GX to move around. New suspension and shocks are improving handling and maneuvering.
On the other hand, Toyota recently confirmed what we wrote some while ago – the new Sequoia is getting a TRD Pro package. The next models that could get this kind of upgrades are 2020 Lexus GX and Land Cruiser. Fox shocks will make the GX run smoothly over obstacles and bumps. Special upgrades will keep the body from hits and damages. Skid plates, all-terrain wheels, unique bumpers, are just some of the upgrades we will see if TRD Pro package comes for the new GX.
When Does 2020 Lexus GX Come Out?
The release date of the 2020 Lexus GX is not official yet. But, we are sure this is the top priority for Toyota’s premium brand. Lexus is working extra to make the mid-size three-row SUV available as soon as possible, and we assume they will preview it in summer. The sales will start late in 2019 or even early in 2020.
