The 2019 Acura RDX heads into a new, third generation. On the other hand, the 2019 Acura MDX is not getting so many updates. However, few changes will refresh this model and keep it competitive. With a next-gen RDX, Honda will continue to put more at its younger crossover in the luxurious branch. The Acura RDX took a spot from its bigger sibling as the entry-level model, and now it is becoming the company’s favorite luxury SUV.
Well, it is not happening by chance. The popularity of compact crossovers is raising. The redesign and new generation of 2019 Acura RDX will definitely draw more attention. However, the mid-size SUV is going to have its advantages. With more seats and space inside the cabin, the 2019 Acura MDX can install more features. Besides the standard differences between compact and mid-size crossovers, RDX and MDX are not treated the same by Acura.
2019 Acura MDX vs 2019 Acura RDX Dimensions
We already answered to question about sizing. The 2019 Acura RDX is a compact crossover, and by that, smaller than its sibling. On the other hand, the 2019 Acura RDX belongs to a higher tier. Its size also left a room for the third row of seats. There are no many mid-size SUVs that can offer extra seating capacity.
Interior Space and Storage
However, how it reflects overall room inside the cabin? Well, passengers in both crossovers will have enough space in all rows. Furthermore, both 2019 Acura RDX and 2019 Acura MDX have plenty of room for cargo. The second one is larger, and it will come with 68 cubic-feet of trunk volume. On the other hand, a new generation of Acura RDX adds some more space behind the second row. The previous model could offer slightly more than 61 cubic-feet. A mid-size model can extend cargo room by folding the rear seats. Acura installs power liftgate on both crossovers.
2019 Acura MDX vs 2019 Acura RDX Performance
The major change is about to happen in the engine room of the next-gen 2019 Acura RDX. Instead of V-6 engines, the compact SUV is now using turbo-four. Direct injection system and turbocharger raise the performance of the smaller sibling. New drivetrain will be capable to produce 270 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque through a 10-speed automatic gearbox.
The 2019 Acura MDX keeps its proven choice. It is a 3.5-liter V-6, the Honda’s favorite powertrain. A nine-speed transmission is paired with a directly-injected unit for outputs of 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. Both MDX and the brand-new RDX will get the optional SH-AWD feature.
2019 Acura MDX Hybrid
The advantage of the mid-size crossover is the presence of a hybrid system. This SUV pairs a 3.0-liter V-6 engine with electric motors to achieve better fuel economy numbers. With the hybrid unit, 2019 Acura MDX will return 26/27 mpg. However, the power of the petrol unit drops to 260 horses, but engineers add two batteries, each one creating 36 hp. Combined, the system delivers 321 horsepower and 290 lb-ft. Also, the transmission is different for a hybrid engine. Honda will deliver Acura MDX with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. There is no plan for hybridization of 2019 Acura RDX.
Interior and Infotainment
The new generation will make the 2019 Acura RDX even more luxurious than it’s ever been. The latest features and equipment should be there. The company unveils just a few of them. For example, the new 10-inch infotainment screen with a True Touchpad is the highlight. Audio controls are improved. Also, inside the RDX buyers will find premium materials and high-quality wrapping.
Well, the MDX is not bad either. But, this is a luxurious class, so every detail is important. Acura is not creating trim levels, but there are a lot of packages that can upgrade your vehicle. For the mid-size SUV, there are special floor mats and various accessories for cargo.
Prices
The most expensive Acura RDX was cheaper than the entry-level MDX. Now, with a new generation, more features, and extra quality, the compact crossover will be slightly more expensive. The SUV was not one of the cheapest models in luxury class. Now, it must not boost the price to keep up with its rivals, Infiniti QX30 and Lexus RX 350. But, compared to the mid-size three-row 2019 Acura MDX, it is still more approachable. The bigger vehicle will also get many updates, which will raise the price to at least $45,000. The previous RDX started from $36,000. With all upgrades, the maximum cost was $44,000.
Expectations
The new generation will definitely boost the interest for 2019 Acura RDX. Its sales numbers are raising in last ten years. On the other hand, the mid-size model is not performing badly. Two SUVs are even in the last couple of years in sold units. Around 50,000 copies of RDX and MDX were delivered to buyers in 2016 and 2017. Next season, experts are sure that compact SUV is going to raise the bar. It will be a tough challenge for 2019 Acura MDX. If it doesn’t manage to keep up the pace, we could see the new generation of this vehicle soon after 2020.
